The term Teozintle comes from the nahuatl word "teocentli". Teo means "god" and centli "corn", so: "corn of the gods". Teocintles are the wild plant species of the corn. They are the direct origin plants of the corn which became domesticated for cultivation as food for the ancient inhabitants of Mexico.

Son los ancestros directos de los cuales se domesticó el maíz como cultivo para alimentar a los antiguos habitantes de México.
